Order of the Arrow

Order of the Arrow Song! (In honor of NOAC 2012)

Today, the national Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC 2012) is taking place in Michigan. Unfortunately,  I was unable to attend. So, in honor of my brother OA Members, I have made this short video of me performing the Order of the Arrow Song on Piano.

The Order of the Arrow song, “Firm Bound In Brotherhood”, was written between 1915 and 1921 by E. Urner Goodman, one of the founders of the Order of the Arrow. Goodman arranged his lyrics to the tune of a hymn written in 1842, “God the Omnipotent,” found in 1920’s Presbyterian hymnals. The music of “God the Omnipotent” was written by Alexis Lvov. Lvov composed the music in 1833 for the patriotic Russian song, “God Save the Tsar.” “God Save the Tsar” was the Russian National Anthem until the Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917.

This Song has become one of the symbols of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts of America’s camping honor society. The Order has many traditions and customs that are held very dear by its members. If you would like to know more about the Order of the Arrow, please respect the privacy of the Order and do not search about it on the internet, rather, talk to your Scoutmaster or local Order of the Arrow Representative.  I hope you enjoyed this performance.

Lyrics:

Firm Bound in Brotherhood,

Gather the clan that cheerful service brings to fellow man.

Circle our council-fire,

weld tightly ev’ry link that binds us in Brotherhood:
